40 Days for Life Kick-off Rally

September 22, 2008

I am so excited for the 40 Days for Life Campaign of prayer, fasting and peaceful vigil, which starts on Wednesday.  A kick-off rally was held yesterday in downtown Grand Rapids and it moved me to the core.  It wasn’t a huge event with flashy speakers spilling sugary statements to people jumping up and down clamoring to get on the bandwagon.  It was simple with a clear and honest message.

The keynote speaker was Mary Verwys who is a twenty-year veteran of sidewalk counseling; twenty years of staring abortion in the face.  She spoke with honesty, conviction and compassion.  I was sickened by some of the facts Mary shared, facts of which she has first-hand knowledge.  My heart broke to realize how low our society has fallen when precious little lives are thrown down the garbage disposal with the rest of our waste.

Not all of what Mary had to say was disheartening.  She spoke of hope and healing.  She testified to the incredible power of prayer and the opportunity we have as the Church Militant to be warriors in this fierce battle.  Mary’s passion spread throughout the small auditorium.  The weight of her words rested heavy on our hearts.  As we digested Mary’s message, a fire grew in all who were present.  There was no mob-mentality, no rock concert enthusiasm: our convictions were sincere and strong.  All were emboldened for the mission of the next forty days.

I know this campaign that is taking place in at least 177 cities in 47 states will have a lasting effect on the spiritual battle against abortion.  I am honored and excited to be a part of it.  I hope and pray you will consider joining me in this fight for the dignity and respect of human life with prayer and fasting.  Be a voice for those whose cries will never be heard.

Rosa sent this to me, this is beautiful. Could we possibly put this article on the 40 Days site so more people could read and be encouraged?
