it’s still Easter!!!

April 15, 2009

And I am still celebrating!

Easter is the “Feast of feasts”, the “Solemnity of solemnities”, and though the Easter season is fifty days, the Catholic Church sets aside the first eight days a special celebration.

The following is from an article by Mark Shea that was on Catholic Exchange today.

For in Christ the tears and even the blood of His Passion have become the very wine of blessedness. Far greater than the mere defeat of the devil is the joyful triumph of life and love everlasting in Christ. Long after the devil is utterly forgotten, Christ and the exiles He has brought home to the heavenly Zion will still be filling their mouths with laughter, for we will be immersed in the ecstasy of the Blessed Trinity made possible for us by Easter.

Throughout this Easter Week, God has given me a foretaste of this promise.  I can’t even begin to describe my elation every time I think not only of the risen Christ, but as the Exultant says so beautifully:  “O happy fault, O necessary sin of Adam, which gained for us so great a Redeemer!”  Take a moment to let that sink in, reader.  “O happy fault, O necessary sin of Adam, which gained for us so great a Redeemer!”  It leaves me breathless!

Each day this week has been filled with joy, laughter, rejoicing and, of course, song and dance.  Pope Benedict said:

When a person experiences great joy, he cannot keep it to himself. He has to express it, to pass it on. But what happens when a person is touched by the light of the resurrection, and thus comes into contact with Life itself, with Truth and Love? He cannot merely speak about it. Speech is no longer adequate. He has to sing.

How true this is!!!  My heart has been singing all week and the rest of me is dancing at every possible moment!  And why, you may ask, has Easter given me a renewed spirit?  Again, I’ll let Pope Benedict explain:

Resurrectio Domini, spes nostra! The resurrection of Christ is our hope! This the Church proclaims today with joy. She announces the hope that is now firm and invincible because God has raised Jesus Christ from the dead. She communicates the hope that she carries in her heart and wishes to share with all people in every place, especially where Christians suffer persecution because of their faith and their commitment to justice and peace. She invokes the hope that can call forth the courage to do good, even when it costs, especially when it costs. Today the Church sings “the day that the Lord has made”, and she summons people to joy. Today the Church calls in prayer upon Mary, Star of Hope, asking her to guide humanity towards the safe haven of salvation which is the heart of Christ, the paschal Victim, the Lamb who has “redeemed the world”, the Innocent one who has “reconciled us sinners with the Father”. To him, our victorious King, to him who is crucified and risen, we sing out with joy our Alleluia!

Rejoice with me, dear reader!  Alleluia!  Christ is risen!
