marathon mom

June 9, 2011

One and a half years ago, my mother dedicated herself to running a half marathon in honor of my sister, Rosario. Last year, Mom ran for herself and finished a 25k before she turned 60. This year she took on the most intense running challenge for runners of all ages: a marathon.

She trained for weeks and months, through the snow, ice and cold of a Michigan winter, through the rain, mud and fog of a Michigan spring.  Hours upon hours, miles upon miles, preparing her body for the mother of all races: a twenty-six point two mile run.  A marathon is an incredible accomplishment for any person.  For a 60-year-old woman, I was worried that it might prove impossible.

On May 28, 2011, my mother ran for five and a half hours to cross the finish line of the Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City, Michigan!  She did it!  Mom ran a marathon!  She looked impossible in the face, shrugged and kept running.  She is one amazing, inspirational woman, my marathon mom!

Mom’s car proudly displays her accomplishments!

But in all fairness, she’s run two half marathons and two 25k’s.
